Please vote – and vote Strategically. Splitting the vote is a vote for Harper

Well, it certainly has been an exciting couple of weeks.  So much has changed that even the pollsters are having a difficult time predicting the outcome.  Let’s hope for the best. I will adjust my strategic page tomorrow, based on my best (hopeful) estimate of the outcome.

The most important thing to do is to vote. This will make a difference.

Next vote strategically; pick the party most likely to defeat Harper in your riding.

Thanks :)

Do we want someone like Harper leading us?

My sentiments on this subject are best described by Harper himself and by his behavior at the G20 summit. This YouTube video says it better than I can; disturbing.

Strategic Voting; page has been updated!

I looked at the voting patterns (see Strategic Voting page). It is very important that we get as many people out to vote as possible.  Harper is hoping that you stay home!  In a democracy we want everyone voting.

There are about 50 seats that can move, but we have to collapse votes of the 3rd place party and focus on the second place party in some ridings.   If we can do this, the election will be okay. With an increased voter turnout, it will be even better!

Furthermore, what is with Elections Canada…. is Harper preventing them from promoting the fact that people should get out and vote?  More on this later.

Only a few days left… time to get everyone to vote.

Does Harper have the courage of his convictions?

Cartoon by Bruce MacKinnon The Chronicle-Herald, Halifax, NS

Does Harper have the right to avoid questions or hide his views on topics of concern to voters.  We know that in the past he has said one thing and then did  another.  So if he is going to put his brand on Canada, it is reasonable to believe that this stamp will reflect his own personal beliefs, and therefore he should be transparent on these beliefs.  Layton , Ignatieff and Duceppe declare their views on tough issues; Harper must also.

Do we trust what Harper says on controversial issues?

Cartoon by Bruce MacKinnon The Chronicle-Herald, Halifax, NS

Harper said

“As long as I am prime minister we are not opening the abortion debate,” Mr. Harper declared. “The government will not bring forward any such legislation and any such legislation that is brought forward will be defeated as long as I am prime minister.”

The Globe and Mail, April 21, 2011

And we all know he said he would not tax Income Trusts, but later did .

“How much is Stephen Harper’s word worth? In the wake of the Prime Minister’s stunning reversal on income trusts this week, many voters will understandably be wary of taking anything he promises at face value in the future. After all, it is the second time in less than a year that Harper broke his word in a spectacular fashion.”

Chantal Hébert Toronto Star, Nov 03, 2006

Let’s hear what Harper said himself on income trusts.

Elections Canada bends to Harper Government – no special ballots for students!

Cartoon by Bruce MacKinnon The Chronicle-Herald, Halifax, NS

Well this is disturbing.  Special on-campus ballots have been canceled by Elections Canada.  This has been common practice in the past, however the Harper supporters want this stopped and guess what – Elections Canada stopped it.  I smell a rat, and that rat is eating away at our democracy.

They did the same thing with Census Canada.  They were afraid the information collected in a proper census will provide data for decision making, so they stopped it.

See what Rick Thinks!

Harper makes it harder for students to vote!

So the youth are starting to organize …. yea!  And the Harper government is putting hurdles in place to slow this down, and thus reduce the chance of students voting.

On Friday, Elections Canada ruled that 241 votes cast by “special ballot” that the Conservative Party initially sought to have nullified are valid and will be counted. The Tories have agreed with the ruling and withdrawn their complaint. But the electoral body also ordered all returning officers to refrain from setting up on-campus stations to accept special-ballot votes, eliminating a potentially easy way for students to vote early during their busy final exam period. (globe and Mail 2011-04-15)

So, in a Harper democracy, students will be discouraged from voting – in fact, this government has Elections Canada so terrified that they are ordering returning officers to stop special ballots for students…. another terrible attack on our democracy!

Harper lacks confidence in Flaherty’s budget projections!

Cartoon by Bruce MacKinnon The Chronicle-Herald, Halifax, NS

Harper made many promises in this election – provided  the budget is balanced …. He obviously has little confidence that Flaherty can balance the budget and if you can’t trust the finance minister, it time to get a new one!

Harper stated they will  balance the budget in 2015, then miraculously decided that they will do it a year earlier! What is that all about?

In 2008, Flaherty projected no deficit, then a small deficit, and finally the largest deficit in Canadian history.

See what Harper said, then Flaherty

It appears that Harper wanted this election!

Cartoon by Bruce MacKinnon The Chronicle-Herald, Halifax, NS

Yep, that’s the way I see it.  Harper wanted this election. If not, he would have put  $2.2 billion in the budget to support Quebec’s harmonization costs,  Duceppe would have voted supported for the budget (and probably vote against the contempt of parliament motion) thus avoiding this $300 million election.   Instead, he decided he wanted the election and made the announcement to pay these same harmonization costs,  after the election was called!

Harper CAN’T estimate costs – $16Billion vs $29billion for aircraft

Cartoon by Bruce MacKinnon The Chronicle-Herald, Halifax, NS

So what is going on.  We have the HARPER government saying the new jet fighters are going to cost $16 billion and everyone else saying it is going to be $29 billion.  Does he think we will believe him… if he just keeps repeating himself?

And what about the CH-148 Helicopters.  “The helicopters were supposed to be delivered in 2005 at a cost of $1.8 billion. Now delivery has been delayed to 2012 and the price is up to $5.7 billion” (Toronto Star 2010-Dec-05)

That’s not all. “The defence department also started the process to buy 15 Chinooks for $1.2 billion plus another $2.2 for maintenance, for a total of $3.4 billion. We are now already up to $4.9 billion and the first fully capable helicopter is scheduled for delivery in 2013, five years later than planned”(Toronto Star 2010-Dec-05)

After reviewing this information how can the Conservatives claim they are the best government to look after the federal finances?

Canada may be better off financially than many countries, however, the credit for this must go to Paul Martin.

Harper does not object to being called a liar – Twice!

For the second time since this election was called, Harper has not objected to being called a liar.   In the last election, he threatened to  sue Dion…. is Harper going soft on Duceppe?

Harper in Contempt of Parliment

Cartoon by Bruce MacKinnon The Chronicle-Herald, Halifax, NS

Do we really want to give the “Harper Government” more power?

His government is in contempt of parliament, and therefore, in contempt of Canada and it`s people. Funny, he now wants these same people to re-elect him.

The answer to that is to vote strategically.
